It turns out it does. This is a wide region, with medieval towns, castles, and rural landscapes spread across central Romania. Distances can look short on a map, but travel times add up quickly—especially on mountain roads or when linking smaller villages.
In this guide, I’ll break down the best places to stay in Transylvania for first-time visitors, including the pros and cons of each base and the types of accommodation you can expect. It’s designed to help you decide what makes sense for your itinerary, whether you’re planning a road trip or relying on day tours.
I tend to prioritise smaller, character-filled accommodation over chain hotels, as I find it adds to the overall experience of a place. That said, I’ve included a few more practical options as well, particularly where things like lift access or parking make a difference.
If I were planning this trip today…
With limited time, I’d base myself in Brașov and stay somewhere central and easy to access—likely Casa Chitic Boutique Hotel.
With more time, I’d add a night inside the citadel in Sighișoara. Staying somewhere like Casa Savri completely changes the experience.
For most travellers, a mix of both works best—Brașov as a base, with an overnight in Sighișoara if you can.

That’s why choosing the right base—or combination of bases—can make a big difference to how easy your trip feels.
For most first-time visitors, there are three main places to consider: Brașov, Sibiu, and Sighișoara. Each offers a different experience and suits a slightly different style of travel.

- Sibiu works well as a second base, with a more relaxed feel and easy access to central Transylvania
- Sighișoara is best experienced as an overnight stay rather than a base, particularly if you stay inside the citadel
If you’re short on time, it’s usually better to base yourself in one place and minimise travel. If you have more flexibility, splitting your stay between two locations can give you a more rounded experience.

If you’re travelling north towards Maramureș, it’s a natural place to break the journey—and staying inside the citadel gives you a completely different experience once the day visitors leave.

Where to Stay in Brașov
Old Town (Historic Centre) – Best for First-Time Visitors
If it’s your first time in Brașov, the Old Town is by far the most convenient place to stay. Centred around Piața Sfatului, this is where you’ll find the main sights, restaurants, and walking tour meeting points, all within easy reach.
The area is compact and easy to navigate on foot. You can head out early to enjoy the square before it fills with visitors, or return in the evening when the buildings are lit up and the atmosphere is at its best.
Accommodation here is a mix of boutique hotels, guesthouses, and apartments, often set within historic buildings. That adds to the character, but it can also mean smaller rooms, limited parking, and fewer modern features in some properties.
If you want a central, easy base with everything close by, this is the best place to stay.
Old Town Summary

Just outside the historic centre, areas like Șchei offer a quieter, more residential alternative while still being close to the Old Town. This neighbourhood has a more local feel, with traditional houses, small guesthouses, and fewer crowds than the busy streets around Piața Sfatului.
Staying here gives you a bit more space and a calmer atmosphere, and you can usually walk into the Old Town in around 10–15 minutes. It’s a good option if you prefer to be away from the busiest areas, particularly in peak season.
Some accommodation is also located on the hills overlooking the Old Town, particularly around Warthe Hill. These properties often have excellent views, but the walk back up can be very steep. I stayed in this area and found myself relying on Uber for my return trips.
Șchei & Hillside Areas Summary

If having a view over Brașov is a priority, this hillside hotel offers some of the best panoramas of the Old Town. I stayed in this area and found the views impressive, but the trade-off is the steep walk back—you’ll likely rely on Uber or a taxi in the evenings.
Choosing the Right Area in Brașov
If you’re deciding where to stay in Brașov, it largely comes down to how you want to balance convenience, atmosphere, and ease of access.
- Stay in the Old Town if you want to be close to everything and make the most of your time on foot.
- Stay just outside the centre (Șchei or nearby streets) if you prefer a quieter base with a more local feel.
- Choose a hillside stay if views are important, but be prepared for a steep walk or short taxi ride when returning from the Old Town.
For most first-time visitors, the Old Town is the best choice. It’s the easiest and most practical base, especially if you’re only staying a few nights.

If you’re adding Sibiu to your itinerary, the Old Town is the most enjoyable place to stay. Centred around Piața Mare and the smaller squares nearby, this is where you’ll find the city’s main sights, cafés, and restaurants, all within easy walking distance.
Sibiu feels a little more relaxed than Brașov. The streets are wider, the pace is slower, and it’s an easy place to wander without a set plan. It works particularly well as a second base after Brașov, giving you a different atmosphere without adding complexity.
Accommodation is a mix of boutique hotels, guesthouses, and apartments, many set in historic buildings. As elsewhere, that brings character but can mean stairs, smaller rooms, and occasional quirks.
If you’re staying in Sibiu, the Old Town is the best place to base yourself.

Sighișoara Citadel – The Most Atmospheric Place to Stay
If you’re looking for the most memorable place to stay in Sighișoara, it’s hard to go past the medieval citadel. This UNESCO-listed old town is still fully intact and lived in, with cobbled streets, pastel houses, and centuries-old buildings that have been converted into small guesthouses.
Staying here feels very different from visiting on a day trip. Once the tour groups leave, the citadel becomes quieter and far more atmospheric—especially in the early morning and evening.
Most accommodation inside the citadel is boutique in style, often set within historic buildings rather than purpose-built hotels. That’s part of the appeal, but it also means comfort levels can vary.
I’d recommend staying inside the citadel for one night if you can—it adds a completely different dimension to your visit.
That said, the experience does come with a few practical considerations. The streets are cobbled and can be quite steep in places, so a reasonable level of mobility helps—especially if you’re heading out in the evening or returning to your accommodation after dinner.

You’ll still be close to everything. The walk up to the citadel takes just a few minutes, so it’s easy to explore at your own pace without staying inside the historic core.
I stayed in Hotel Central Park Sighișoara during my visit and found it a comfortable and convenient base, especially with parking and easy access.

What About Cluj-Napoca?
Cluj-Napoca is sometimes described as the cultural hub of Transylvania, but it serves a different purpose to places like Brașov or Sibiu.
It’s a lively university city with a strong café and dining scene, and it works well if you’re exploring western Transylvania or flying in and out of the region. It’s also the closest base for visiting attractions like the Turda Salt Mine.
While Cluj didn’t stand out to me in the same way as Transylvania’s historic towns—our visit coincided with particularly cold, blustery weather—it did deliver one of the best meals of our entire trip, which says a lot about the quality of its food scene.
That said, Cluj isn’t the most practical base for first-time visitors. It’s further from many of Transylvania’s best-known sights, and it doesn’t offer the same easy access to castles, fortified churches, and day trips as Brașov.
For most itineraries, it makes more sense as:
- a starting or finishing point
- a stop on a longer route
- or a base if your focus is western Transylvania
If your time is limited, you’re usually better off focusing on Brașov, and adding Sibiu or Sighișoara if you have more flexibility.
Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Transylvania
There’s no single “best” place to stay in Transylvania—it depends on your route, how much time you have, and the kind of trip you’re planning.
For most first-time visitors, Brașov is the easiest and most practical base, with good access to castles, fortified churches, and organised day trips. If you have more time, adding Sibiu gives you a more relaxed second base, while an overnight stay in Sighișoara offers a completely different experience inside one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval citadels.
The key is not to try to do everything from one place. Distances are manageable, but travel times add up quickly, and using one or two well-chosen bases will make your trip far more enjoyable.
