Romania

A land of legends, castles, and contrasts—Romania offers dramatic landscapes, medieval towns, and rich traditions without the tourist crowds.

My impressions of Romania

Romania is a country of striking contrasts—shaped by many influences over the centuries. The communist era still casts a long shadow, but so do older layers of history, from ancient fortresses and dramatic castles to ornate Orthodox churches.

In Transylvania, the landscapes are as dramatic as the legends—this is the land of Vlad Dracula, after all. In rural Maramureș, age-old traditions are still part of daily life.

There’s a raw, untamed edge to Romania too—whether it’s the slow, old-fashioned trains, the dense forests, or the quiet thrill of knowing bears aren’t far away.

  • Transportation Tip – to get the best from your Romania adventure, you will need to hire a car. The railway system is unlike the rest of Europe. It’s reknown as slow and unreliable.
