I’ve visited Kraków twice and stayed in both a luxury hotel and a charming apartment in the Old Town. On one trip, I enjoyed the elegance of the Bachleda Luxury Hotel; on another, I settled into the convenience of the Calliope Apartments. Both offered excellent access to the city’s top sights — and showed just how different the Kraków experience can be depending on where you stay.

Best Areas to Stay in Kraków for First-Time Visitors

Old Town

If it’s your first time in Kraków, the Old Town is hard to beat. This compact, walkable district surrounds the Main Market Square (Rynek Główny), the heart of the city since medieval times. It’s a lively area full of restaurants, cafés, galleries, and landmarks like St Mary’s Basilica and the Cloth Hall.

Encircling the entire Old Town is Planty Park—a green belt of shaded paths, benches, and fountains that traces the line of the former city walls. It’s perfect for a quiet stroll or a scenic shortcut between sights.

Staying in the Old Town makes it easy to explore on foot, and you’ll appreciate being close to the action — especially in the evenings, when the square comes alive with music, lights, and local energy. It’s also ideal if you like to get out early with your camera or enjoy a quieter start to the day before the tour groups arrive.

For first-time visitors, this is the most convenient and atmospheric base. Accommodation here ranges from grand historic hotels to surprisingly affordable guesthouses and aparthotels, all within a few minutes’ walk of Kraków’s top sights.

Kazimierz

Just a short walk south of the Old Town, Kazimierz is Kraków’s former Jewish quarter — now one of the city’s most atmospheric neighbourhoods. Blending centuries of history with a lively creative scene, this area is known for its independent cafés, street art, small museums, and laid-back vibe.

While it’s still very walkable to the Main Market Square (about 15 minutes on foot), Kazimierz feels noticeably quieter and less touristy. It’s a great choice if you want to stay somewhere with a bit more local character, and often slightly lower accommodation prices than the Old Town — particularly for apartment-style stays.

In fact, Kazimierz tends to have a higher concentration of apartments and aparthotels, making it an ideal base if you prefer the flexibility of self-catering or need more space for a longer stay. It’s also a good option if you’ve already visited Kraków before or simply want a neighbourhood with a more lived-in feel.

Around Kraków Główny or Wawel Castle: Practical or Peaceful

For a stay just outside the busiest parts of Old Town, the area around Kraków Główny, the main train station, is practical and budget-friendly. You’ll have easy access to transport, shops, and restaurants, with the Old Town just a 5–10 minute walk away.

If you prefer a quieter option, the streets near Wawel Castle along the Vistula River offer calm, walkable surroundings with boutique hotels and apartments.
